Read: Matthew 5:5

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

Observe:

As Jesus talked about ‘the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven’ (Matt 5:3). Two verses later, Jesus mentioned about ‘the meek, for they will inherit the earth’. Jesus wants us to know how God distributes his inheritance. It’s not what we have attained for ourselves – the grand job titles, the wealth, the qualification or the number of properties we own. Our inheritance from God is not dependent on how much we know or how brilliant we are. How God gives or rewards is based on what he sees in our hearts.

God sent Samuel to meet Jesse of Bethlehem. God had chosen one of Jesse’s sons to replace Saul as king for Israel (1 Sam 16:1). Jesse’s sons appeared before Samuel. Samuel thought Eliab was the one to be anointed as king. Eliab is Jesse’s firstborn and eventually was in Saul’s army (1 Sam 17:13). Maybe Eliab looked fitter and stronger, carries himself with great confidence and stand taller than the rest of his brothers. However God said to Samuel ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ (1 Samuel 16:7). I don’t think God rejected Eliab because there’s something wrong but there’s something missing in Eliab. God is searching for someone who is humble and will honour God to manage his kingdom. Finally the youngest of Jesse’s sons appeared before Samuel after tending the sheep. Then God said ‘he’s the one’. God wants Samuel to anoint David as king of Israel though David is the youngest in the family and a shepherd boy.

Most people if not all would choose to favour or think highly of those who are capable, smart or talented. God’s way of choosing people to manage his kingdom on earth is by looking at how humble we are in our hearts.

Apply & Do:

In all that I do, I should reflect upon my own attitude and my heart in how I accomplish my work and attain my goal. It’s not how successful I am in life but how I put God first in my heart.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, may I surrender my heart to you. Please cleanse it and make it pure. Please humble me if I need more training and moulding. May I do all things by putting God first before my own self interest especially when I come before you in adoration and worship. Amen.
